Flip through any luxury bridal magazine or North Shore lifestyle title and you’ll notice the same thing: the weddings look effortless. They aren’t. That magazine-ready look is the product of careful décor decisions — and it’s very achievable for your own celebration.
The North Shore look
Chicago’s North Shore — Evanston, Wilmette, Winnetka, Glencoe, Highland Park, Lake Forest — has its own wedding aesthetic. Lakefront light, historic estates, country clubs and garden conservatories reward décor that’s refined rather than loud: tonal florals, crisp linens, candlelight, and one or two moments of real drama.
Five editorial tricks to borrow
- A tight palette. Editorial weddings rarely use more than three colours. Pick a main tone, a supporting tone and a metal.
- One statement per room. A hanging install, a flower wall or a dramatic head table — not all three.
- Texture over colour. Velvet, linen, satin, glass and greenery in the same hue look richer than five colours.
- Candles, everywhere. Photographers love candlelight; it flatters skin and makes every surface glow.
- Details at eye level. Menus, place cards and chargers appear in close-up shots — make them beautiful.
Décor for North Shore venues
- Country clubs: keep centrepieces low near the windows to preserve views of the greens or the lake.
- Gardens and conservatories: let the setting lead with seasonal florals and lanterns for evening.
- Historic estates: echo the architecture with candelabra, classic whites and antique gold.
- Lakefront terraces: plan for wind — weighted vases, hurricanes for candles, and low arrangements.
